This research project is based at the Asia Research Institute (ARI), a university-level research institute at the National University of Singapore. The project's Principal Investigator is Dr Peter Marolt, Research Fellow at ARI.

Thank you for dropping in. Please use the sidebar to explore this site, visit my other website, or contact me for further information.

January 2012  -  I am co-organizing a conference on Modes of Activism and Engagement in the Chinese Public Sphere. The Call for Papers can be found here. The deadline for abstract submissions is approaching (31 Jan). Do contact me with any questions!

October 2011  -  The Asia's Civil Spheres workshop took place on 29-30 September 2011. The participants have made the workshop come alive beyond our expectations!

August 2011  -  The Asia's Civil Spheres workshop programme and abstracts are online. I look very much forward to meeting you all here in Singapore.

July 2011  -  We have received close to 100 abstracts -- thank you all for your interest. The abstract selection process is now completed and we have sent out the invitations. The workshop programme and abstracts will be available in late July or early August.

April 2011  -  The Call for Papers is up, please submit your paper abstracts by 1 June 2011. Do contact me for details and questions. Thank you in advance for your interest and participation.

March 2011  -  We have secured funding from various sources to hold a workshop titled Asia's Civil Spheres: New Media, Urban Public Space, Social Movements. Co-organizer Rita Padawangi and I aspire to gather scholars interested in the nexus of issues suggested by the title. The Call for Papers will be online very soon.

March 2011  -  The serious deterioration of the human rights situation in China compels me to put on hold  my research on Beijing-based (environmental) activisms so as to not endanger my research participants. I have hence broadened the range of cultural and political activities I will be looking at in my research (going beyond the former, self-imposed focus on environmental issues).

September 2010  -  This month I've presented some preliminary research findings at Global Urban Frontiers here in Singapore and at Internet, Politics, Policy in Oxford, England.

July 2010  -  I have returned from a preliminary field-trip to Beijing and am now hiding in my office (you can find me here) where I analyse my findings, write about things, and plan next steps. (Luckily, writing helps me think.)

June 2010  -  Interested in getting involved as part of NUS's Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP)? Please see "Research & Activities" page for details.

May 2010  -  I have now added some juicy details about the project, mostly on the page "Research & Activities". Thank you for your interest.

January 2010  -  This research project will commence in May 2010. More information will be available then. Thank you for your patience.
